Blotched snake eel
The Blotched snake eel〔(Common names for ''Callechelys muraena'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 (''Callechelys muraena'') is an eel in the family Ophichthidae (worm/snake eels).〔(''Callechelys muraena'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 It was described by David Starr Jordan and Barton Warren Evermann in 1887.〔Jordan, D. S. and B. W. Evermann, 1887 (14 Feb.) (2441 ) ''Description of six new species of fishes from the Gulf of Mexico, with notes on other species.'' Proceedings of the United States National Museum v. 9 (no. 586): 466-476.〕 It is a rare tropical, marine eel which is known from the western and northwestern Atlantic Ocean, including the United States (North Carolina to Florida), the Gulf of Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula, and Canada. It dwells at a depth range of 27-115 metres. Males can reach a maximum total length of 60 centimetres.〔
